Career prospects

The Foundation Year in Psychology is offered as an entry route for students who do not (yet) meet the entry requirements for degree-level study. You enrol on a four-year course, which includes the one-year foundation course.
Our Foundation programme comprises a range of learning outcomes that will allow you to gain skills that can be transferable to a variety of different working environment. However, many employers will ask for a BSc degree, an MSc degree and/or a PhD degree, so you may want to continue with your studies.
Students may want to consider the foundation year if (1) they do not have the right qualifications for a full degree, (2) they feel they are not yet ready for degree-level study, or if they are returning to study after a period of work, (3) some students might feel they need some help to get up to speed with the demands of learning before considering an enrolment for a full degree.
The programmes are especially designed to prepare students for starting an undergraduate degree in the area of Psychology. For instance, students may not be familiar with the relevant subjects in the discipline of Psychology, or if you did not achieve the grades you need to be offered a place at NCIUL.
When you complete this year successfully you will be able to progress directly onto our BSc in Psychology. The number of students who progress to degree level is usually high and mostly they become successful graduates.
The Foundation year is designed to engage students in all aspects of your learning. You are required to have good attendance and be motivated to participate, with your peers or collaboratively in small groups.
You will learn through interactive lectures, supervised practicals, seminars and workshops, online activities and tests, guided research, individual and group projects, but also through reflection. You will receive formative verbal feedback in practical sessions and summative feedback is provided electronically and/or verbally for the summative assessment.
Upon successful completion of the Foundation Year, you will automatically progress on to our three-year, full-time BSc in Psychology.
Our BSc Psychology with Foundation Year will provide you with the necessary knowledge and critical appreciation of psychological theories and research. You will be taught and supported in order to achieve high levels of numeracy, literacy, problem-solving and reasoning ability. You will develop the subject-specific skills you need for a career in Psychology and postgraduate training, as well as a range of highly transferable skills that can be used in a variety of different occupations (e.g., data analysis, marketing behaviour, human resources, etc.).
At NCIUL there will be an Honours progression route for the Foundation degree. This will enable you to pursue new career paths in the psychological services, human resources, clinical practice, and academia. Furthermore, our BSc in Psychology gives you access to our MSc in Psychology if you decide to progress your studies further.
