We offer two start dates, so you can start your degree in October or January.
The Foundation year seeks prospective students interested in different modes of delivery.
On their application form, students will indicate their preferred mode of delivery; meaning,
- Either they choose to register as distance learners or as face-to-face students.
- Either they choose to be full time or part-time students.
At the beginning of each year, this choice may be rectified compiling a specific form, made available through the Student Office. In exceptional cases, a change in pathways can be granted during the academic year- this will be determined on a case by case basis by the Associate Dean.
The different mode of delivery are detailed as follows:
They will experience a traditional UK learning environment, within an international context and will attend face-to-face lectures and seminars in our London classrooms. They will have access to a variety of physical and online resources. Assessment will be continuous and will consist of both formative and summative assignments, some of which will be completed individually and some will be completed in a team.
Face-to-face students will have access to a VLE which may contain, where appropriate:
- Occasional specialised lectures to facilitate revision and students with special needs. When appropriate, lecturers may audio record their lessons (in whole or part) and upload them as podcast.
- Personal Page with information about modules, scores, assessment, feedback (written and in form of voice message)
- Other important guidelines/policies such as institutional policies or academic guidance
- A link to Turnitin and/or Ithenticate for assignment submission (and out plagiarism check)
- A link to other online resource centres (for example Oxford University Press, Pearson and more)
- A link to databases and e-journal subscriptions
- A chat room/forum groups to interact with other peers, regardless of their status (distance learning students or Face-to-face students)
- Help Desk support (in case they require help in finding information, uploading assignments and similar)
They are typically students resident in the UK or abroad, who wish to study more flexibly perhaps due to other personal and/or work commitments. These students are able to access online materials through an extensive VLE.
Through this system, distance learners will also be given plenty of opportunities to interact with tutors, members of staff and other students. Distance learners will be able to connect with online and traditional peers through a chat room feature in their VLE Personal Page, and be able to build invaluable skills through collaborative assessment, such as team challenges and team projects. In order to ensure fairness, quality and equity between these different modes of delivery, distance learners may be able to attend intensive seminar opportunities programmed during weekends, or whenever possible through other means in real time.
At the beginning of each module, distance learning students will be provided with a list of lectures and seminars they are invited to attend in person. Specific timings for these events will be provided well in advance.
Distance learners will also have access to online databases, e-journal subscriptions, ebook collection, a variety of formative assessments and additional reading materials to discuss with their personal tutor and/or module leader. Our staff is fully committed to facilitating their learning experience by providing timely feedback and additional office hours through Skype, according to staff and student availability.
Distance Leaners may be able to access the following on the VLE:
- Recordings of lectures and seminars.
- Additional specialised lectures that complement the static lecture recordings. When appropriate, lecturers may audio record their lessons (in whole or part) and upload them as podcast, to support students with special needs and facilitate revision. This more intensive opportunity will provide them with a clearer understanding of the topics covered in a structured way, without the need to compromise on the interaction and discussion opportunities that may arise during traditional lessons.
- Lecturer’s notes given in booklet form that will advise on material for further reading or study and other useful suggestions to enhance knowledge.
- Self-evaluation questions divided into lectures and topics covered during the teacher’s class.
- Personal Page with information about modules, scores, assessment, feedback (written and in form of voice message).
- Other important guidelines/policies such as institutional policies or academic guidance.
- A link to Turnitin and/or Ithenticate for assignment submission (and out plagiarism check).
- A link to other online resource centres (for example Oxford University Press, Pearson and more).

NCIUL is committed to supporting student studies and if students have additional learning requirements, we will do our best to accommodate them.
FULL TIME STUDENTS: both distance learners and face-to-face students can apply for full time programme.
PART-TIME STUDENTS: both distance learners and face-to-face students can apply for a part time mode of delivery. In that case, students will find all the information they need in relation to programme structure and module specification in their Welcome Package.
It is only possible to change your mode of delivery (either face-to-face classes or distance learning), at the beginning of the year (January for January starts and September for September starters). This can be done by completing a form available through the Student Office and authorised by the Dean.
